Loco Moco Sandwich

This Loco Moco Sandwich is savory, rich, hearty, and will satisfy your comfort-food craving!

 


Putting a spin on the classic Hawaiian dish, we created a Loco Moco sandwich using the viral crispy rice-waffles as buns while keeping the same key features: juicy beef patty, rich and savory brown gravy, and a perfectly fried egg.





 

 

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1: BEEF PATTIES
  • Combine the ground beef, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and salt. Mix well.

  • Form beef into patties and lightly press them in the center to avoid rising during cooking.

STEP 2: GRAVY
  • Caramelize the onions with 2 TBSP of butter for 30-45 minutes over low heat.

  • Mix the cornstarch with room temperature water (about 2 TBSP) until it forms a runny paste.

  • In a saucepan, combine the beef stock, remaining butter, soy sauce, Worcestershire, and cornstarch mixture. Mix well over medium heat.

  • Once thickened, stir in the caramelized onions and set aside.

STEP 3: RICE WAFFLE BUN
  • In a bowl, mix egg with the rice.

  • Add rice to the waffle maker and cook for 10-12 minutes until crispy.

  • Note it works best to use day old rice.

STEP 4: EGG
  • Fry eggs and set aside.

STEP 5: SANDWICH
  • To the rice waffle bun, add the beef patty, gravy, crispy onions, fried egg, and top with green onion.



 


 

INGREDIENTS

Makes 5-6 servings

HAMBURGER PATTIES

  • 2 lb ground beef

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp salt

GRAVY

  • 1/2 yellow onion, sliced and caramelized

  • 1 1/2 C beef stock

  • 4 TBSP unsalted butter, divided

  • 1 TBSP soy sauce

  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1.5 TBSP cornstarch

WAFFLE BUN

  • 1 C white rice (day old)

  • 1 large egg

SANDWICH

  • 5-6 eggs

  • 1/2 C crispy fried onions

  • 2 TBSP green onion, sliced
